Increasing wireless speeds
Currently, I use wireless broadband using netgear wireless router. I also experience slower speeds when I watch Youtube or download large files.

Currently, I get download speeds around 180 Kb/s with my 8MB connection. I have my router 6 meters from my PC and there are two walls and a refrigerator between the devices. I have no antenna presently and plan to buy one soon to boost the speeds.

As I do not know much about wireless and what maximum speeds I can get theoretically, are there any ways to boost the speeds?

If there is a refrigerator right between your PC and the router, you could experience speeds affected by interference. If so, changing the settings in windows or in router firmware will hardly help you to boost the speeds.

So, you need to move it or use high power antenna in a interference free environment. If there are issues of interference, you better use second access point placing it in another room can help you to resolve these issues.

Wireless signals can be blocked or intercepted easily. There was a washing machine between my PC and wireless router so I had to move it and I found it worked well.
