Please check whether there are any cordless phones, microwaves or electrical equipments very close to the access point, say one meter. As these appliances have the same frequency (2.4 Ghz) like wireless network, they can affect the speed and connectivity of wireless network.

Another trick is to change the position of access point by manipulating the direction of the antennae. Make sure the access point is placed in such a way it receives full range of signals. Remember any reflecting surfaces like mirrors tend to refract the signals resulting in the deterioration of the signals.

Please check the cable that connects the wireless router to the modem. Seems settings are pretty ok. Maybe there is loose cable between the router and the modem.

Have you enabled the wireless network adapter in your laptop? For that, sometimes you need to simply switch on some button on your laptop or you need to enable it in your OS.

You can replace the existing antennas with more powerful ones. I changed my antennae and presently I use 14 dB gain antennae and it performs wonders!

Since you're using a laptop have you tried sitting closer to the wireless router just for a short time to see if the connection is more stable? If it is, then you can consider moving it, or using stronger antennas, but it's probably less hasse to move the laptop first just to see.

Wireless can be pretty flakey, especially if you have a lot of devices that could be causing interferance, or if you need it to span several rooms.

Wireless downloads are great when you have the right equipment and the higher speed processors. I have not ever had any problem with wireless downloads and would say go for it, you will be pleased with it.
