Bt Broadband speed problems
I signed up to BT Broadband package back in November 2007, I recieved my homehub modem and got online without any problems. I never checked my speed as I was happy with it, I always listen to the radio on the net as well as surfing and downloading without any problems.

About 28th December I began to have trouble streaming radio shows and web pages were having to load instead of being instant. I began to check my speed and found it has dropped to 131kbps( yes you read it) 131kbps.

Almost a month later, hours on the phone to bt, a new modem and 3 visits from bt broadband enginner, a new socket in my house and being transfered to a spare line in the exchange and it's still the same.

I did have very bad interferance on my land line and could hear the modem working while trying to make calls but after my line was changed in the exchange it is cyrstal clear but the broadband speed is the same.

I use an ethernet cable to connect to the modem, I also have a laptop which I have also connected with an ethernet cable and when I carry out a speed test also gives a result of 131kbps.

When I open the hub manager to check settings it shows the hub getting 5.4 meg and when the enginner connects his laptop to the phone line with his modem he gets 4.8 meg but I cant understand why I cant.

Any help or advice would be a great help.

As you say the line is giving out 4.8meg speed, the problem could be with the internet hardware, it seems.

Either homehub modem or the Ethernet cable that connects your laptop with modem is faulty. Try your line with other modem or with new cable and see whether you can see any difference.

I agree with Mike. You can try that. Do you have any electrical devices near your modem or your PC? Sometimes, the interference of such devices can slow down the speeds.

This is very unusual this sounds like an error or problem has just occured all of a sudden.Do you have any devices near by that give off wireless signals which could affect the operation of the modem eventhough this is not wireless.

This is all i can think of as there isn't really many simple solutions to this.
