absolutely lost and in need of your help
Hi everyone here is a little story and i wonder if you could help , if you can you would be my familys hero ...i`m now totaly confused

story
Speedtouch adsl 510 ( damn good router )seemed to die , normal Orange light flashing for no connection suddenly became a manick flash which eventually disapeared like a dieing heartbeat ???

replaced with crappy Belkin 4 port adsl router , this thing cant even be found from its own setup disk when installing with Vista ??? my assumption is its just poop , i only purchased it coz i was desperate to get back on the net and PChurld were close by

also when my adsl connection is plugged into it , it refuses to show any kind of indication a adsl cable is even attatched , there should at least be a flashing light to indicate its attatched and needs the usual pword and deets ...no this thing just sits and only shows a power light

another odd thing is that although it shows no adsl connection present when the wifes pc or mine is connected to it and the wireless router , our wireless devices are visible in Vista`s network panel

this at least says to me that both out internal Pc net cards are fine and working ....you`d think

so move along a stage and more frustration insues , as the Belkin didnt want to connect to the adsl i purchased another router from another source

D-Link ADSL2 DSL-524T 4 port router , this also refuses to show an adsl connection , at least this one has the decency to have flashing lights and in the adsl light world , it flashes as if to look for a connection but then goes off , repeating over and over , odviously not finding an adsl connection

again , if we network to it , we can see wireless devices and each other so the pass through side is working fine and again it indicates our internal PC net cards are working

ok so from reading that lot we have deduced that
1. all internal net cards work
2. wireless WAP works
3. cabling is all fine

now a logical person would say ...aha , micro filters !!! and i would say ..ALL REPLACED WITH NEW ...hmm what about the cable from router to adsl filter ....again BRAND NEW EXPENSIVE ONE

so summing up again we have

1. all internal net cards work
2. wireless WAP works
3. cabling is all fine
4. all new filters
5. all new router to filter cable

so if we have eliminated all the above as good, we should then move onto the fact that there is a fault with BT or the ISP , BUT both report no errors and all is fine ????

and then lets throw this one at you

what if i was to tell you i am on the net here at home using a adsl USB speedtouch 330 modem with the latest Vista drivers because the original drivers crashed Vista which was an added kick in the back side ???? i got round the problem by safe mode uninstall and then borrowing my bro`s 3G USB connection which at least allowed me to connect and find the proper drivers but i diverse , sorry but its been an arduous few days

back to the story

which then says i have a perfectly good adsl line ??? i would actually be happy to have no adsl at the modem , at least i would know where the fault lies

like i said IF you can figure this one out ...your a hero

i`m totaly lost now as to which and what way to turn , we need a 4 port adsl router that works and gets my family back to there various habits , at the mo i am the only one with a connection , i will prolly have to sort ICS for the wife for the short term but please if you have any advice we would dearly appreciate it as we or more like I am lost

no normal router can find the adsl but a USB one can ....why ( sob sob ) internal net cards maybe , but on 2 machines at the same time ?? and they can stil access each other and the wireless int network ???

like i said ..i`m lost big time

well the story or saga has come to a close

i will post my findings for others to read

my ISP tech peeps had all my details of my router and informed me that no matter what settings my router was using it should at least sync with the exchange

BUT , i found by changing the routers int config from ADSL2 to ADSL it connected and works fine ????

i`m sure the experts here would say " odvious" or "no cant happen impossible" regardless , my findings are true and have worked for us

if you buy an ADSL2 router and cant get connected , change it to ADSL from the routers own login home page settings using whatever adress is required for your specific router

all that time and effort i went to not to mention cost

you live and learn i guess
