What's a Mac number?
If I want to change my broadband I have been told that I need to get a Mac number. What is this and how do I get it other than phoning up the broadband provider?

In order to get your MAC code you need to ring up your current ISP and ask. They'll give you a number thats valid for 31 days (I think).

You need to give the MAC code to your new ISP.

Your current broadband connection keeps working untill you use the code.

MAC number guarentees uninterrupted broadband serivice when you switch providers. When you switch a provider for any reason, you should ask for MAC number from your current provider who is expected to give it to you within seven working days. (Ofcom's new regulations instruct the ISPs so. If your provider breaches it, you can go for complaint)

You should give your MAC to your new provider, who will take necessary steps for smooth switching.( I don't know how many in the UK are able to switch smoothly)

Meantime, you will be having broadband connection intact. This is what MAC does. Don't worry, you will not get two bills during this period.

A MAC number needs to be given to your new internet providor.By law your internet providor should give you this MAC number without any hassle. However, i have heard many people requesting this do not get it without aload of questions and hassle from your internet providor your wanting to leave.
