Acquiring Network Address
Just bought a new laptop.

But it will not connect to my wireless router! there is nothing wrong with the router because i have two other computers working fine of it. I have checked but there is no ip address on the new laptop yet, and when i pick up the signal from the wireless router and click connet it says enter network key, i enter the wep key that came with the router and it connects, but after connecting it stays on acquiring network address and the internet doesn't work. it trys to find the network address but in the end gives up.

This is the type of behaviour you'd expect if you're using WEP encryption in open mode and have supplied the notebook with the wrong key.

Open mode will allow the notebook to connect to an access point, but without the correct key, it cannot communicate and therefore cannot obtain a DHCP lease (IP address).

Ensure you have got the WEP key correct (bare in mind that if you used a key/password generation mechanism, different brand products use different algorithms and the key might be different). If your router and other wireless devices support WPA, this might be a good opportunity to scrap the WEP and use better security.

I have never had any problem with them just connecting the way it should. I would try the WPA if your wireless device supports it. If it does not then making sure you are using the right web key is another option.

Are you using the Windows Wireless network setup or the wireless card manafactures one? As I've had this problem in the past where if I use the software that comes with the card it works fine, but if I use the windows one it doesnt.

Also try using WPA if everything supports it as I've had issues with WEP before.

There can be some problem with DHCP so check the DHCP settings of your router and also try manual IP and then see if it works.

Their might be some problem with your settings and you have to check them once and then restart your system to solve the problem

Install the software that came with the card and see if that makes a difference. If not try to run it from the windows software and see what that does for you. Yes you need to make sure that all setting are correct and do not be afraid to try different settings, just either write them down or remember what you did.

Try giving manual ip to your laptop and then assign that in router and see if this works and if this works out that means DHCP is not enabled else there is something wrong with driver or the wlan card of your laptop.
