Free Laptop
I have seen that AOL are giving away a free laptop much as orange are , what are the terms and conditions I know with Orange you have to register for an 18 month contract although you would wonder how they make there money , anyone else seen this deal?

I just have to suggest that you have to be careful about this kind of offers. You may have to buy something first or after you get your "FREE" Laptop. I just think there is not such a thing as free stuff!

Since their contracts are longer than 12 month, even if they give away a free laptop, they do still make a profit even if you leave at the first available oppertunity. They also hope that you stay a customer of their broadband service after your contract has expired, so I beleive its genuine and catch free. Either way, you should always read the full T&C's when you get a broadband package.

It's going to be a pretty poor laptop if you get it for free with a contract. Also, they'd have to give me a lot more than a laptop to persuade me to use their "service"............

Remember the phrase, you get what you paid for. I think that if they have to offer you something free in order to get you to sign up, there is definitely a problem with the service. I would not ever go with AOL Broadband as they are not a backbone phone provider so you will still likely have to pay additional money somewhere.

Update: AOL's free laptop offer
AOL's promotional offer is for only limited period as we know from the latest news that only the first 100,000 customers will get free laptops.
Even if you are one of the early birds, it is unlikely that the free laptop will reach your destination before next month.

I haven't read up on the AoL free laptop offer, But i have on the Orange one. You get your laptop within 10 days. You don't actually get a "free" laptop, what you do get is a free £300 voucher towards a laptop of your choice, so you can either get a laptop for £300, or put money towards a better one.
The broadband is slightly pricey on the orange one though, considering you are capped to 2gb usage per month.
Its a way to attract a lot of customers without the ISP losing any money, which is why I think it is genuine.

Thank you for that, Tom. What happens if you want to move during the two year tie in? I need to get a laptop sometime any way so this has come along at the right time, I just don't want to be paying for someone else's service if I move.

You would need to pay off the remainder of the contract.
IE If you are contracted for 2 years @ £15 per month and you want to leave at the end of Year 1 you would need to pay £180 (£15*12 months) to get out of the contract.
Failure to do this and say you just cancel the direct debit, will end up the company more than likely taking you to court and getting a CCJ against you thus screwing up your credit record.
If you were moving and you cant migrate the contract (Which is often the case) they may take a different view, but it would still be a hefty amount to pay back.
