According to the recent consultation issued by Ofcom to VoIP operators, they should enable 999 emergency services to all subscribers to VoIP, although this will not apply to free VoIP services.
This decision has been taken by Ofcom as the VoIP use has been increasing in the recent years. So far, making calls to emergency services like hospitals and other public places have been offered only to standard PSTN lines using 999.
Some of the VoIP operators offer this facility when you sign up for a VoIP package but most of them do not. It also remains a fact that many VoIP users are not quite aware of unavailability of this service in their VoIP package.
Ofcom has instructed all VoIP operators to inform the customers over 999 services and to increase the availability of 999 to more customers.
The issuing of consultation from Ofcom is most welcome at a time when VoIP service and technolgoy are making tremendous advancements and many people like to get introduced into VoIP telephony, most importantly, many of the existing VoIP users look for a complete replacement of standard telephone equipment with VoIP.
