24 meg broadband by Newnet
Newnet is to lauch its 24 meg broadband in Portsmouth by this August.

Newnet says its 24 Mb broadband will be initially available in Portsmouth and its ADSL+2 network will be later extended to other areas.

24 meg broadband is already a debatable issue. How many will get the promised speed and how many will get disillusioned?

Bloody typical :-) I work across the road from NewNet and have just bought ADSL from another supplier (although its a one month contract so I can switch).

Wonder what Portsmouth exchanges they are doing though. Somehow doubt it will be mine.

Have they given any indication on upload speeds? Sounds a great development, but I'm sure it will be a good year or two until it's available all over the UK.

Great to hear these things are actually starting to be delivered though.

According to their website its going to be 1meg, which considering I can have upto 860k isnt that good. BE offer 0.4meg on their lite service which is exactly the same as I already have with standard ADSL, 1.3meg on their Unlimited service and 2.4meg on their Pro service although to get that you have to sacrifice some of the download speed.

Im in Wales, this probably wont reach me for another 2 or 3 years
The speed sounds awesome though, but will it be a reality, or will they be overselling their own linespeed? I mean, if you have 100s of people running from one switch, how can you promise they will each get 24mbps?

'Just' one meg, kinda dissapointed. 'Be' it will be for me then, I want the upload speed to run a server from home so is important.

I'm getting a half meg with the 1mb I have now, Be offering the 2.4mb upload is by far the best I've seen.

Thanks.

That sounds pretty damned good, 2.4 up. Considering..
If you want to run a home server, try commercial companies that operate in the UK. I think Earthlink and Internap have UK arms, im not sure though

I'm gonna check these out.

When I first planned on doing it, I looked at the prices of a T1 line.....er...no.

Talking £800 a month minimum, an unmetered dedicated server costs less, even half.

Do you know how much bandwidth you will use? When I outgrow my ADSL link which wont be for some time, I'll co-locate for around £50-100per month, comes with 10mbit unlimited transfer which will be more than enough for pretty much anything I can throw at it, or a dedicate server for around the same cost although I personally prefer my own hardware and software configuration.
