MAC number guarentees uninterrupted broadband serivice when you switch providers. When you switch a provider for any reason, you should ask for MAC number from your current provider who is expected to give it to you within seven working days. (Ofcom's new regulations instruct the ISPs so. If your provider breaches it, you can go for complaint)

You should give your MAC to your new provider, who will take necessary steps for smooth switching.( I don't know how many in the UK are able to switch smoothly)

Meantime, you will be having broadband connection intact. This is what MAC does. Don't worry, you will not get two bills during this period.
