There is a movement called 'Fonero' where people can buy wireless routers that offer a private network, plus an access point that only either paying customers or other Fonero members can log in to. You can either be a 'linus' and allow other Fon users to use your network for free in return for free access yourself, or a 'bill' - you have to pay to use other peoples wifi, but make money when people use yours.

It's quite nifty for people who travel a lot - you can check their web site to see if there are any Fonero users in the area you are travelling to.

I picked up one of their routers a while back - it's fairly limiting in what it supports (being neither a true NAT device or AP), but it's a nice idea - and fine for use if you have a fairly simple network set up.
