If you are using ADSL broadband, the speed depends upon the distance between the exchange and your PC. Nearer you are to the exchange, more speed will be your connection and the downloads. Secondly, the quality of wire which connects you to the net also determines the speed of download to some extent.

In case of cable broadband, the speed may be superb, however, it may not be consistent at times, when lots of users are using the cable that runs through your PC.
