Don't know about Mac programs but Cain and Abel is the easiest to use cracker. Most programs create what's called a MD5 hash of the password.
If you have the hash, enter it into Cain and Abel and it will crack it. There are different options, namely a password attack and a brute force. Brute force uses every possible combination, dictionary uses words.
It will take a long time if its a secure password.
Cain and Abel has many other feature to, such as sniffing.
Salted hashes are hashes of hashes (hashed twice).
